Special Lectures in 2026
A scholar is asked to join all of these Special Lectures, because they are specially designed for our scholars (to help understand the diversity of cultures and consider international issues, especially relevant to East Asia). Those who missed a special lecture (with a strong reason) can take a Special Seminar instead. The information of Special Seminar is usually sent by email from AFLSP office or committee members. Alternatively, a scholar can propose a seminar as a Special Seminar as well but please get approval from the AFLSP committee BEFORE joining it. Notice that the requirement for Special Lectures is 6 hours a year.
The 1st: Understanding Japan's Measures to Address the Declining Birthrate
- Date: Sat. May 16th, 2026
- Time: 1:30pm - 4:30pm
- Venue: Room 113, Higashiichijo-Kan, Kyoto University (see access)
- Lecturer: Ms. Meguru Murakami with Japan Research Institute (profile)
- Participants: All scholars and AFLSP related persons
- Abstract: This lecture examines Japan's policies aimed at addressing the declining birthrate, where the number of births has been rapidly decreasing. It reviews the background, objectives, and key characteristics of these measures. It also compares Japan with European countries, where the term "measures against declining birthrate" is not commonly used, as well as with East Asian countries, which are often noted for similarities such as the high cost of education. Based on these comparisons, the lecture provides material for discussion on the direction Japan should take now with a view toward the next 15 years.
